Kids' Summer Fun on a Budget

Keeping the kids entertained while on summer break doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. There are many budget-friendly summer activities that the whole family can enjoy.

1) Have a campout in your yard.

If you can’t take time off from work this summer, take advantage of the great weather, and go camping in your own backyard. Put away the electronics, and enjoy nature with the convenience of your own home being just a few steps away.

2) Enjoy free movies.

Many movie theaters show free (or significantly discounted) movies on certain days. Check the websites of theatres in your area for these special values.

3) Go to a movie or concert in the park.

Some towns and recreation departments offer free movies and concerts featuring local musicians. Check your town’s website or the neighborhood section of your local newspaper for more information.

4) Be a tourist in your hometown.

Get to know your town a little bit more by visiting the local attractions. You might be surprised by what you’ll find so close to home.

5) Have a family boot camp.

Whether it’s a baseball game, bike-riding, or a walk around the block, exercise is good for your body and can be a great family bonding experience.

6) Host a craft day.

Work out an arrangement with other families to host a craft day once a week for a month, alternating the host family each week.

7) Visit your local library.

Free to residents, the library offers programs to help keep children busy and their minds sharp. And, even if you don’t find a program that interests your child or your family, you just might find a few books you’ll like.

It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to participate in summer activities. With a little bit of creativity, you’ll find low-cost and free things to do that the whole family can enjoy!
